Besset - Bessette 1642-1998

Jean Besset born 1642 in Cahors, France - died 1/5/1707 Chambly, Quebec, Canada.
In the year 1665 Jean Besset was part of the group of militiamen leaving France to go to New France, now known as Quebec, Canada. Four, fifty-man companies left the port of LaRochelle, France. Jean Besset was a member of the Carignan-Salieres Regiment, sent to protect the French settlers of the young colony, from the Iroquois Indians. The trip took three months by sailing vessels. While on board the ship the sailors & soldiers gave each other what we call nicknames. They gave Jean the name of "Brisetout" which means "The Wrecker". I would assume Jean liked the name as he used it for the rest of his life.
While serving as a soldier in the Kings Army, Jean met and married Anne LeSeigneur on July 3, 1668. Ann was a Ward of King Louis 14th., also called one of the Kings Daughters. Some seven hundred young ladies, from good familys, were sent to New France in hopes they would marry the soldiers and populate the new country for the King France.

 

The Besset - Bessette Generations

#1-Jean (Twin) Besset, Jr. was born 12/27/1672 in Chambly, Quebec. He died 5/18/1751 in St. Mathias, Quebec. His first wife was Marie Anne Benoit, a widow.They were married on May 16, 1695 she died of wounds defending herself from the Iroquois Indiand who tried to take her captive in August 1697. One child was born to them ,Marie-Jeanne Besset born 2/9/1696 Laprairie, Quebec & died May 28, 1697. Six years earlier Jean Besset was surprised by Indians and was scalped in 1691 but lived to tell the tail.
Jean then married Madeleine Plamondon in Chambly, Quebec on Sept. 27, 1700. Jean and Madeleine had nine children: Marie-Josephe born 9/9/1705-Jean Baptiste born 3/28/1711 - Marie Charlotte born 1702 - Madeleine Charlotte born 1708 - Jean Francoise born 5/19/1714 - Marie Marguerite born 1716 - Francoise born 1735 - Guillaume born 10/24/1717 and Francoise born 1720.

#7- Napoleon Boni Bessette born April 15, 1871 in Oswego, Kansas. Died Jan. 2, 1949 in Concordia, Kansas. Married Nelda Bolduc Oct. 23, 1893, born 1876 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, died March 20, 1922 in Saint Anne, Illinois.

#8 - Albert Henry Bessette born Dec.12,1894 Shawnee, Oklahoma. Died April 11, 1959 Concordia, Kansas. Married Virginia Dorais Sept. 18, 1917. Born in Aurora, Kansas Sept 10, !894, died March 6, 1957 in Concordia, Kansas. Four children: Marie Lucille b: May 22,1919, Armand Val b: Feb. 14,1922, Doris Mae b: May 30, 1925 & Alberta Pauline (Polly) b: Sept. 2, 1927.
